About the Location
The Island Breeze Luau is located adjacent to the Ahu'ena Heiau, on land traditionally known as Kamakahonu (eye of the turtle). Kamakahonu has been called one of the most historic sites in all of Hawaii. It was here that Kamehameha the Great spent his last years and where he eventually died. It was the location of the feast that was held to mark the overthrow of the kapu system that changed Hawai'i forever. The first missionaries landed at Kamahonu Bay in 1820. Across the bay is Hulihe’e Palace, built by Hawai’i’s governor in 1883, John Adams Kuakini. It was also here that the young prince Leleihoku II enjoyed the calm of Kona before his death, and it was here that his brother King Kalakaua maintained a residence and made a boathouse of a historic building.
